Dog Age Calculator

Convert your dog's age to human years using the size-based chart vets use, plus the newer DNA-methylation formula - for small, medium, large and giant breeds.

How to use it

  1. Enter your dog's age in years and months.
  2. Pick the expected adult weight class.
  3. Read the human-age equivalent and the life stage.

How it works

The old "multiply by 7" rule is wrong: dogs mature very fast in the first two years (a 1-year-old is roughly a 15-year-old human, a 2-year-old about 24), and then age at a rate that depends on size - big dogs age faster. The chart used here follows the widely cited size-based guidance (similar to the AVMA/AAHA charts).

A 2020 study of Labrador DNA methylation (Wang et al., Cell Systems) proposed human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31; it is shown for comparison and was derived from one breed.

FAQ

Is one dog year seven human years?

No. The first year equals about 15 human years and the second about 9 more; after that it is roughly 4-7 years per dog year depending on size.

Do small dogs live longer?

Generally yes; many small breeds live 13-16 years, while giant breeds average 8-10.
