Dog Chocolate Toxicity Calculator
Estimate the theobromine dose your dog ate from the chocolate type, amount and dog weight, and whether it is in the mild, severe or life-threatening range.
How to use it
- Enter weight and amount; check the wrapper for the cocoa %.
- Call your vet or a poison hotline right away for anything above the mild range - do not wait for symptoms.
How it works
Theobromine (plus caffeine) is the toxic compound. Typical thresholds: about 20 mg/kg mild signs (vomiting, diarrhoea, thirst), 40-50 mg/kg heart effects, 60 mg/kg and above seizures. Values are approximate; the darker the chocolate, the more dangerous.
FAQ
How much chocolate is toxic to a dog?
Symptoms can start around 20 mg of theobromine per kg of body weight - roughly 0.35 oz of milk chocolate per pound of dog. Dark and baking chocolate are several times more dangerous.
What should I do if my dog ate chocolate?
Call your veterinarian or an animal poison hotline right away with the type and amount; inducing vomiting should only be done on professional advice.
