Pet Food Cost Calculator
Work out how long a bag of dog or cat food lasts and what feeding costs per day, month and year, for one or several pets.
How to use it
- Enter the bag size and price (check the label; many stores sell the same food in several sizes).
- Enter how many cups each pet eats per day - use the feeding guide on the bag or the dog and cat food calculators.
- Kibble typically has 3.5-4.5 cups per pound; check the label if it is shown.
- Add monthly treats, toppers or supplements.
How it works
Days per bag = (bag pounds × cups per pound) ÷ (daily cups × pets). Cost per day = bag price ÷ days per bag. Comparing foods by cost per day - rather than bag price - is the fairest way, because richer, more calorie-dense foods need smaller portions.
This is a budgeting aid, not a feeding recommendation: portion size depends on your pet's weight, age, activity and the food's calories. Ask your vet if you are unsure.
FAQ
How much does it cost to feed a dog per month?
A 30 lb bag at $54 feeding 3 cups a day lasts 40 days, so about $1.35 a day or roughly $41 a month, plus treats. Large dogs and premium diets can cost several times that.
How many cups are in a pound of dog food?
Dry kibble is typically 3.5 to 4.5 cups per pound; a 30 lb bag holds about 120 cups. Check the packaging for the exact figure.
Is expensive pet food worth it?
Not always. Compare the cost per day and the ingredient and calorie information, and let your vet guide you for medical needs.
